Problems in Analysing Hebrew Poetry

چکیده

'Poetry' and 'prose' are categories which are normally used to distinguish the two main types of discourse in language. But there is some debate whether this division is helpful and valid when applied to the discourse of the Hebrew Bible. Whereas most scholars accept the validity of the two categories, Kugel (1981) has argued forcefully that the category of poetry is a misleading imposition of a foreign concept when applied to the biblical materials. He argues that what has been called 'poetry' is better seen as a widely varying complex of rhetorical features which elevate the style, but which are also present to a lesser degree in prose. Unlike classical European poetry, there is no rhyme, alliteration or regular meter sharply to distinguish poetry from prose. Rather there is a continuum between more loosely organised discourse with few heightening features and more elevated discourse with an increasing number of heightening features such as parallelism and terseness (Kugel, p. 85).

Medieval Opinions on the Spanish School of Hebrew Poetry and its Epigones

Since Solomon Ibn Gabirol left the world and Moses Ibn Ezra, Jehudah Halevi, and Abraham Ibn Ezra died, the well of poetry has dried up, inspiration has disappeared, and God’s spirit no longer manifests itself. None of their successors can compare with them. We backward ones, like beggars, gather the crumbs and refuse that have fallen from their table. We hasten day and night over the ways trod...

Pottery, Poetry, and Prophecy: An Essay on Biblical Poetry

OETRY is not only central in the title, but for the study of the Hebrew Bible. There is no intention here of disvaluing the prose of the Bible, which constitutes the first major literary composition in that medium ever produced, so far as I am aware, whether we speak of the so-called Court History and the J source of the Pentateuch of the 10th century B.C., or the composite whole which we may c...

Language Support A Simple Technique for Typesetting Hebrew with Vowel Points

This paper describes a simple mechanism for typesetting Hebrew with vowel points. Hebrew uses a large set of accents that represent vowels, consonant modifiers, and cantillation instructions. These accents are placed above, below, or inside letters; a single letter can carry several accents. The solution that we describe, which is designed for PostScript [2] output devices, leaves the placement...

Isaiah 1:2-20 Scansions with Prosodic Notations

Stichographic arrangements of ancient Hebrew poetry that have come down to us in manuscript tend to dichotomize lines, regardless of whether they consist of two or three versets. This has the advantage of maintaining a consistent arrangement. It has the further effect of emphasizing the major and deemphasizing the minor caesura of a 1:(1:1) or (1:1):1 structure. In the scansions that follow, th...
